The Supreme Court on Monday lifted a lower court’s order blocking the Trump administration from continuing layoffs at the Department of Education. The unsigned decision allows President Trump’s executive order to move forward, effectively restarting his plan to dismantle the agency.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon praised the ruling, saying it affirms the president’s authority over executive agencies. Nearly half the department’s staff was cut in March.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued a strong dissent, arguing that only Congress can legally abolish a cabinet-level agency. She accused the administration of pursuing “lawlessness” and criticized the Supreme Court’s use of its emergency docket to fast-track controversial policies without full hearings.
The decision marks another win for Trump from the court’s emergency docket, a process increasingly used to implement parts of his agenda swiftly.
