White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), the incoming national security adviser under President-elect Donald Trump, earlier this week. The meeting, despite the Trump transition team not signing a formal memorandum of understanding, marks the first interaction between the two advisers as part of the handover process.
The discussion covered pressing global issues, including the war in Gaza and the situation involving hostages held by Hamas. The meeting took place shortly after Sullivan returned from President Biden’s trip to South America. While Sullivan and Waltz declined to comment on the specifics, Sullivan previously acknowledged having interacted with Waltz during his time in Congress. He expressed his intention to ensure a smooth transition during the 60-day period.
