Steve Bannon, the former Trump campaign official and current right-wing podcast host, was released from federal custody this week after serving a four-month sentence for defying House Jan. 6 Committee subpoenas. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed Bannon’s release, coming just days before the U.S. presidential election.
Bannon was initially convicted in July 2022 on two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with subpoenas from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. A prosecutor argued that Bannon had shown “contempt for Congress” by prioritizing allegiance to Trump over lawful compliance, hindering the investigation into the Capitol breach.
Ahead of his prison sentence, Bannon had continued his War Room podcast, claiming Democrats could only win upcoming elections through alleged fraud, an assertion dismissed by mainstream analysts. Bannon’s release follows his appeal attempts, which delayed his sentencing until this year.
Peter Navarro, another former Trump official convicted of similar charges, served his sentence earlier this year, receiving a supportive reception at the Republican National Convention following his release.
