Steve Bannon pleaded guilty to fraud on Tuesday for misleading donors in the “We Build the Wall” campaign, avoiding jail time under a plea deal. He received a three-year conditional discharge, requiring him to stay out of trouble.
Leaving court, Bannon said he felt “like a million bucks” and called for an investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. His attorney, Arthur Aidala, dismissed the case as weak, stating, “Everyone knows Steve Bannon, he always wants to put up a fight.”
The plea deal bars Bannon from fundraising for charities in New York or using donor data from the campaign. Bragg called the resolution a victory against fraud, emphasizing New York’s commitment to protecting charitable giving.
Bannon was initially indicted in 2022 on charges of money laundering, fraud, and conspiracy. Prosecutors alleged he falsely promised all funds would go to border wall construction but instead used donations for personal enrichment.
The case followed a Trump pardon in 2021 that erased federal charges against Bannon, but it did not apply to state crimes.
