More than 20 attorneys general and the governors of Kentucky and Pennsylvania have sued the Trump administration over the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) deep cuts to the AmeriCorps program. The lawsuit challenges the administration’s decision to downsize the agency, which placed 85% of its staff on administrative leave, leaving only a small number of employees.

The move, part of DOGE’s broader efforts under Elon Musk to cut government spending, mirrors similar downsizing at USAID. The administration cited AmeriCorps’ failed audits and $1 billion annual cost as justification.

AmeriCorps funds volunteer service projects in education, disaster response, public safety, and health.

New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin said the states “will fight this senseless move,” calling it a threat to critical programs. Washington state Attorney General Nick Brown said the cuts would hurt vulnerable communities and accused the administration of treating public dollars as “his to do with what he will.”

The states argue that dismantling AmeriCorps limits their ability to support community programs, and they are seeking to block the administration’s actions in court.
