The U.S. State Department said Saturday it has received “credible reports” suggesting Hamas may launch an attack on Palestinian civilians in Gaza, an act officials warned would constitute a “direct and grave violation” of the ceasefire negotiated by President Donald Trump.

In a statement, the department said, “Should Hamas proceed with this attack, measures will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and preserve the integrity of the ceasefire.” No further details were provided about the alleged threat or what form U.S. action might take.

The warning comes after Trump earlier this week issued a stern message to Hamas, saying, “If Hamas continues to kill people in Gaza, which was not the deal, we will have no choice but to go in and kill them.” The president later clarified that U.S. troops would not enter Gaza, suggesting instead that “people very close, very nearby” would intervene “under our auspices.”

The ceasefire agreement, reached last week, ended a two-year war between Israel and Hamas and included terms for hostage returns and aid delivery. U.S. officials have deployed a small team of 200 troops to Israel to monitor the truce but maintain that no American personnel will enter Gaza.

The State Department said maintaining the ceasefire “remains a top priority for the region’s stability and humanitarian recovery.”
