The New Georgia Project, a nonprofit founded by Stacey Abrams, agreed to a $300,000 fine for campaign finance violations during Abrams’ 2018 gubernatorial run. The Georgia Ethics Commission determined the organization and its affiliate, the New Georgia Project Action Fund, failed to register as independent committees and disclose $4.2 million in contributions and $3.2 million in expenditures.
The violations included canvassing, social media advocacy, and operating field offices supporting Abrams and other candidates. The fine, the largest in the commission’s history, follows a consent order signed by the groups’ attorneys, acknowledging 16 legal violations.
Abrams, who left the organization in 2017, declined to comment. An attorney for the groups expressed relief at resolving the matter. Raphael Warnock, who led the nonprofit in 2018 before becoming a senator, stated compliance decisions were not his responsibility during his tenure.
