A bomb threat leading to the evacuation of Springfield City Hall in Ohio on Thursday was linked to hateful language directed at the city’s immigrant community, particularly Haitians. The threat echoed false claims recently promoted by Republicans, including former President Donald Trump.

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue confirmed to The Washington Post that the threat specifically targeted immigrants, coinciding with Trump’s baseless comments during the second presidential debate. Trump claimed that Haitian migrants in Springfield were “eating the dogs” and continued spreading similar falsehoods during a campaign stop in Arizona, asserting that the influx of immigrants was destroying the town’s way of life.

City officials, including City Manager Bryan Heck, strongly refuted these claims, stating that the rhetoric and misinformation have harmed the community. Heck emphasized Springfield’s positive attributes, urging people to reject the misleading narratives amplified by social media and political discourse.
