Conservative House Republicans have expressed concerns to President-elect Donald Trump about Speaker Mike Johnson’s leadership, including his handling of government funding and party management. Sources revealed GOP members began voicing grievances to Trump weeks before last week’s funding crisis, with one insider noting, “Members are calling Trump to dump Johnson.” Critics highlighted Johnson’s perceived indecision and lack of assertiveness, raising doubts about his ability to manage the House.
Johnson faced backlash after presenting a short-term funding resolution that excluded Trump’s demand for a debt limit increase. The resolution ultimately avoided a government shutdown but prompted dissatisfaction among Republicans and Trump, who deemed it “a Democrat trap.” Johnson maintains he had Trump’s approval for the measure, but Trump’s subsequent remarks suggested wavering confidence.
With the January Speakership vote approaching, GOP divisions persist. Hardliners like Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) oppose Johnson, while others remain undecided. Johnson’s fate may hinge on Trump’s support, which remains uncertain. Trump has indicated Johnson could remain Speaker if he acts decisively, but one GOP lawmaker remarked, “If it weren’t for Trump, I don’t think he would be Speaker.”
