Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) assured that Congress has already allocated disaster relief funds for immediate response to Storm Helene, which has devastated states from Florida to Tennessee. Speaking at the New York Stock Exchange, Johnson referenced the inclusion of FEMA fund replenishment in the three-month stopgap bill signed into law last week.

Johnson acknowledged the storm’s widespread destruction, with more than 120 fatalities and extensive damage to infrastructure, saying, “We’ll be working with FEMA, state, and local agencies to address the many needs.” While President Biden suggested a potential request for additional funds, no decisions have been made. Johnson did not rule out supplemental relief when Congress returns.

Meanwhile, lawmakers such as Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) are pushing for a bill proposing $15 billion in further relief funding.
