Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, impeached for declaring martial law in December, has been detained after evading authorities for weeks. Law enforcement entered the presidential compound early Wednesday to apprehend Yoon, following a failed attempt on January 3.

Before being taken to the Corruption Investigation Office, Yoon criticized the nation’s judiciary, stating, “The rule of law has completely collapsed in this country.” Despite his lawyers offering voluntary cooperation, authorities rejected the proposal.

Acting President Choi Sang-mok urged restraint, emphasizing accountability for any violence during the detainment. Yoon had vowed to resist the impeachment and remained shielded by his presidential security team until his arrest.

Investigators now seek court approval to formally arrest Yoon, who will be released after 48 hours if denied. The Constitutional Court will hold its next hearing on Thursday, continuing deliberations on whether to remove Yoon from office permanently.
