Republican South Carolina Rep. RJ May was arrested Wednesday and charged with 10 counts of distributing child sexual abuse material, according to federal prosecutors. May allegedly used online aliases, including “joebidennnn69,” to exchange illicit files through the Kik social media platform.

May was arrested at his Lexington County home and is scheduled to appear in federal court Thursday. The charges carry sentences of five to 20 years each if convicted.

May, a political consultant first elected in 2020, helped form the state’s far-right Freedom Caucus and frequently clashed with mainstream Republicans. After news of his arrest broke, the Freedom Caucus expelled May from the group.

He had been increasingly isolated in the House chamber following an October 2024 federal seizure of his electronic devices.

May previously drew attention for speaking out on youth protections during debates over transgender healthcare, stating, “We as legislators have an obligation to ensure that our children have no harm done to them.”

Prosecutors have not yet provided further details about the ongoing investigation.
