South Africa’s newly appointed U.S. envoy, Mcebisi Jonas, is facing backlash over past remarks calling President Donald Trump “racist” and “homophobic.” The comments, made during a 2020 speech shortly after Trump’s election defeat, resurfaced as diplomatic tensions between the two countries escalate.

Jonas’s comments were made at the Ahmed Kathrada Lecture, an event hosted by an anti-apartheid organization. He referred to Trump as a “narcissistic right-winger” and said democracies worldwide should reflect on how such a leader came to power.

His appointment comes weeks after the Trump administration expelled former South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, who labeled the expulsion a “badge of dignity.” The administration has halted aid to South Africa and criticized its ties with Iran and stance on Israel.

The Trump administration has since appointed conservative media figure Leo Brent Bozell III as the new U.S. ambassador to South Africa.
