Hospitals in Colorado, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., have halted gender-affirming care for minors following President Trump’s executive order cutting federal support for such treatments. Denver Health has stopped surgeries for those under 19, while Virginia’s VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond suspended both medications and surgeries. Children’s National Hospital in D.C. paused puberty blockers and hormone therapy.

Trump’s order directs agencies to ensure federally funded hospitals stop what it calls the “mutilation of children.” Critics, including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, argue such language misrepresents medical care.

Other hospitals, like Lurie Children’s in Chicago, are reviewing the order but continue services for now. A study found gender-affirming treatments for minors are rare. Denver Health emphasized ongoing support for transgender patients’ mental health.
