The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History has removed explicit references to Donald Trump from its impeachment exhibit, a spokesperson confirmed Thursday. The change follows a content review and comes after reported White House pressure regarding museum leadership and exhibit content.
Trump, the only president impeached twice, had been featured in a temporary label first installed in 2021, which the museum said was designed to address current events. The label remained until July 2025 and has now been removed as the exhibit was restored to its 2008 layout.
A museum spokesperson said a future update will include “all impeachments.” The current display now simply notes that “only three presidents have seriously faced removal,” referencing Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Richard Nixon.
In March, Trump signed an executive order instructing the Smithsonian to eliminate displays deemed “improper, divisive or anti-American,” prompting concerns of political interference. The museum is publicly funded but maintains independence in its content decisions.
In June, Trump critics also targeted the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, leading to the resignation of director Kim Sajet.
Trump was impeached in 2019 and 2021, but was acquitted both times by the Senate.
