Washington, D.C. — Six House Republicans joined nearly all Democrats in voting to repeal President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, marking a notable break within the GOP over trade policy and executive emergency powers.

The 219–211 vote would terminate the national emergency declared last February that enabled the administration to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, later raised to 35%. The White House has argued the tariffs were necessary to address cross-border drug trafficking and trade disputes.

Reps. Don Bacon (R-NE), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Jeff Hurd (R-CO), Kevin Kiley (R-CA), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) voted for the repeal measure introduced by Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY). Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME) was the only Democrat to oppose it.

As the vote concluded, Trump warned Republicans on Truth Social that those opposing tariffs would “seriously suffer the consequences” in future primaries.

Several of the GOP lawmakers who supported repeal have previously challenged Trump on executive authority or trade strategy. The measure now faces an uncertain path in the Senate, and Trump has indicated he would likely veto legislation undoing the tariffs.
