Senate Republicans are distancing themselves from President Donald Trump’s repeated remarks urging American families to buy fewer dolls as a way to manage rising costs from his tariff policies. The comments, intended to illustrate the need for sacrifice during economic transitions, have drawn criticism from within the party.

Trump told reporters that “a 10-year-old girl doesn’t need 37 dolls,” suggesting families could adjust to fewer luxuries. Several GOP senators called the example out of touch. Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) said the message “may not translate to the family worker,” and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) bluntly stated, “I’m not sure it’s the best example.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Trump’s analogy smacks of government overreach: “How many dolls you have is up to the people who buy them, not up to the president.”

Despite concerns, Republicans remain mostly unified behind Trump’s tariff agenda as trade talks continue with dozens of countries. Talks with China, however, remain stalled, with a 145% tariff still in place.
