A new Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee report projects that AI and automation could replace nearly 100 million U.S. jobs over the next decade. The report, released Monday by Democratic staff under Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), examines how emerging technologies may reshape the workforce and economy.

Using ChatGPT to model the impact across 20 sectors, analysts found that 15 of those industries could see over half their workers replaced by automation. The most affected sectors include fast food and counter service (89%), customer service (83%), freight and stock laborers (81%), and secretarial roles (80%).

The report calls for new legislation to mitigate job losses, proposing a 32-hour workweek, a $17 minimum wage, expanded overtime rights, and worker ownership incentives.

In a Fox News op-ed, Sanders warned that unchecked automation risks “dehumanizing” society, urging policies that promote human well-being over corporate efficiency.
