The Republican-controlled Senate passed a $340 billion budget resolution early Friday, prioritizing immigration enforcement, military expansion, and energy production. The 52-48 vote came after an all-night “vote-a-rama,” with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) as the lone Republican to oppose the measure.
“This is about securing the border,” said Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-SC), defending the bill’s $175 billion allocation for border enforcement. The budget also directs $150 billion toward military expansion, even as Trump and Elon Musk have pushed for Pentagon spending cuts.
The measure faces opposition from the House, where Republicans are advancing a broader budget that includes a $4.5 trillion tax cut and a $4 trillion debt limit increase. Trump has endorsed the House version, calling it “one big, beautiful bill,” but Senate Republicans view their plan as a fallback.
The budget resolution allows Senate committees to craft legislation that can pass with a simple majority. However, debates over spending cuts, tax policy, and Medicaid funding are expected to create hurdles as lawmakers attempt to reconcile their differences.
