Senate Democrats plan to introduce a resolution condemning former President Trump’s pardons of Jan. 6 rioters, including those convicted of assaulting Capitol Police officers. The resolution, to be proposed Monday by unanimous consent, states, “The Senate disapproves of any pardons for individuals who were found guilty of assaulting Capitol Police officers.”

Democrats, including Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), criticized Trump’s actions, with Murray saying, “Donald Trump’s pardons are a wholesale endorsement of political violence.” Sen. Andy Kim (D-N.J.), who helped clean debris at the Capitol after the attack, warned that the pardons could encourage future political violence.

While the resolution is unlikely to pass in the Republican-controlled Senate, it could force GOP senators to publicly oppose or block the measure. Trump’s blanket pardons covered nearly all 1,500 people charged in the riot, including 600 accused of assaulting law enforcement.
