Two Senate Democrats are accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of overseeing a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” as Israel intensifies its takeover of Gaza City and threatens to annex parts of the West Bank.
Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) made the charge after returning from a seven-day trip to the region. Van Hollen said, “We came away with the inescapable conclusion that the Netanyahu government is engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Gaza and slow-motion ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.”
The accusation comes as the International Court of Justice considers whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The International Criminal Court has also issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and others for alleged war crimes.
Van Hollen and Merkley cited rising violence, mass displacement, and famine conditions as signs of a deliberate campaign. They also criticized a reported U.S.-Israeli plan to relocate Palestinians and redevelop Gaza, calling it “sickening” and dishonest.
“We’re well over 60,000 people killed, half of them children,” Van Hollen said. “Spinning this as voluntary is one of the grossest frauds I can remember.”
