Senate conservatives are advising Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene to abandon her attempt to remove Speaker Mike Johnson, citing higher priorities. Greene’s motion to vacate, filed a month ago, protests Johnson’s handling of Ukraine aid and government spending. However, only two House Republicans support her effort.
Sen. Roger Marshall praised Johnson’s leadership, stating, “Moses could not do a better job than what Mike Johnson is doing right now.” Johnson dismissed Greene’s effort, and her push is expected to fail. Leading Senate conservatives, including Sen. Ted Cruz, have criticized the effort as “utterly ridiculous and counterproductive.”
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell expressed relief at the prospect of ending the chaos in the House, while Rep. Chip Roy suggested that the power to oust a Speaker should be used sparingly. Most members prefer focusing on the upcoming election rather than engaging in internal disputes.
