The Senate confirmed former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard as the next director of national intelligence in a 52-48 vote. In her new role, she will oversee national security intelligence, including preparing the president’s daily briefing and advising the National Security and Homeland Security Councils.

Gabbard’s nomination was controversial. During her January testimony, she accused the intelligence community of being “weaponized” against political opponents. The New York Times reported she was briefly subjected to additional airline scrutiny after attending a Vatican event tied to an FBI-listed businessman.

A former Army National Guard member with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gabbard was elected to Congress in 2012. She declined reelection in 2019 to run for president but later endorsed Joe Biden.
