The Senate voted 51-45 on Monday to confirm Linda McMahon as Education Secretary, following President Trump’s directive to eventually dismantle the department. All Republicans supported her confirmation, while Democrats opposed it.

McMahon, a longtime Trump ally, previously led the Small Business Administration and chaired the America First Action super PAC. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) defended her qualifications, emphasizing that education is primarily a state and local responsibility.

Trump has instructed McMahon to “do a great job and put yourself out of a job.” At her confirmation hearing, she clarified that any plan to close the department would require congressional approval and insisted that funding for education programs would remain intact.

Democrats raised concerns that eliminating the department could harm students with disabilities and low-income students who rely on federal aid. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called McMahon’s confirmation “a slap in the face” to public education supporters.
