Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) stated he read the wrong speech after calling the Democrats’ agenda a “clear and present danger” at the Republican National Convention on Monday. Johnson later told PBS Newshour that he intended to deliver a speech calling for unity but the teleprompter loaded an older version.
“Today’s Democrat agenda, their policies, are a clear and present danger to America,” Johnson said in Milwaukee. However, he clarified, “That speech was written last week. They literally loaded the wrong speech… I had taken that out. Instead, I’d loaded about that we needed a somber moment in history. We should heed President Trump’s call to unite.”
Johnson’s comments come amid heightened discussions about campaign rhetoric following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. The former president has urged Americans to unite after a bullet grazed his ear during a rally in Butler, Pa.
Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s new running mate, blamed the Biden administration for the recent shooting at the rally.
