Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said Saturday he referred a social media post from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s press office to the Secret Service, citing “zero tolerance” for threats against officials. The message on X suggested Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem would “have a bad day today,” adding, “You’re welcome, America.”

The statement came ten days after Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was assassinated, underscoring broader concerns about political violence in the United States. Essayli confirmed he had asked for a full threat assessment.

Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the press office’s post, saying such rhetoric “isn’t what America needs right now.” In response, Newsom’s team highlighted a March 2020 post from Donald Trump that warned of a “BAD day for Crazy Bernie!” and reposted it with similar language to Essayli’s comments.

Over the weekend, Newsom also signed legislation barring federal, local, and out-of-state law enforcement from wearing face coverings in California, part of his resistance to federal deportation policies.
