Former President Donald Trump was unharmed after the Secret Service thwarted an assassination attempt while he was golfing at his West Palm Beach course on Sunday. Agents spotted a gunman with an AK-47-style rifle near the course’s property line, firing on the suspect, who fled but was later arrested.
The incident follows a previous attempt in July when Trump was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania. The recent attempt raises questions about the level of security provided to the former president during the contentious election season.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, though his motives remain unclear. Routh had previously expressed political opinions online, including support for Ukraine and criticism of former President Trump stating:
“@POTUS Your campaign should be called something like KADAF. Keep America democratic and free. Trumps should be MASA …make Americans slaves again master. DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose.”
The White House confirmed that President Biden and Vice President Harris were briefed and relieved to know Trump was safe.
