The Secret Service repeatedly denied requests for additional personnel and security resources from agents guarding former President Donald Trump before the July 13 assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. An official cited resource limitations as the reason for the unfulfilled requests, which spanned two years.
Despite Trump’s security detail’s requests for magnetometers, additional agents, snipers, and specialty teams, the agency could not fully accommodate these needs. Secret Service spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi highlighted the agency’s dynamic threat environment and emphasized modifications were made to ensure protectee safety, including using state or local partners.
Contradicting claims of denied resource requests, Guglielmi initially stated such claims were “absolutely false.” However, The Washington Post reported that requests for enhanced security at Trump events were consistently denied.
The agency’s decade-long staffing shortfall persists despite budget increases, compounded by challenges in recruitment post-George Floyd and lengthy background checks.
