Scott Peterson, serving a life sentence for the 2002 murder of his wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn child, has gained support from the Los Angeles Innocence Project in his quest for exoneration. This marks a new direction in Peterson’s legal battle following the successful overturning of his death sentence in 2020.
The Los Angeles Innocence Project confirmed its representation of Peterson and the ongoing investigation into his claim of innocence. Laci Peterson and her unborn child disappeared in December 2002, leading to Scott Peterson’s murder charge in April 2003 after Laci’s body was discovered. Despite his plea of not guilty and consistent claims of innocence, Peterson was convicted in November 2004. The initial death penalty verdict was later revoked due to juror screening issues.
Recently, Peterson’s legal team filed new court motions, including requests for DNA testing and the sealing of certain records. These filings, the first in a year, hint at a possible new defense strategy focusing on a burglary near the Petersons’ home at the time of Laci’s disappearance.
The Los Angeles Innocence Project, recognized for using DNA evidence to overturn Maurice Hastings’ wrongful murder conviction in 2022, is now applying its expertise to Peterson’s case. Their mission includes exonerating the wrongly convicted and advocating for higher forensic evidence standards in legal proceedings.
