Two of the nation’s largest scientific organizations will collaborate to continue climate research after the Trump administration dismissed nearly 400 contributors to the National Climate Assessment (NCA), the U.S. government’s leading climate report. On Friday, the American Meteorological Society (AMS) and American Geophysical Union (AGU) announced they will co-publish over 29 peer-reviewed journals on climate change’s impacts, risks, and solutions.
The NCA, a congressionally mandated report coordinated by 14 federal agencies, had been set for release in 2028. Its future is now uncertain after the dismissal of staff and authors, as well as the disbandment of the Global Change Research Program.
The AGU and AMS emphasized that their work will not replace the NCA but will offer a vital alternative to keep climate science moving forward. Experts like Katharine Hayhoe noted the importance of continued research to inform decisions about infrastructure and public health.
Federal websites have also seen climate-related information removed under President Trump‘s second term, compounding concerns about transparency.
