Senate Democrats unanimously reelected Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) as their leader for another two years and promoted Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to the third-ranking leadership position, succeeding retiring Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.).
Schumer expressed gratitude for his colleagues’ support, emphasizing the caucus’s focus on addressing national challenges and celebrating recent legislative accomplishments. Democratic senators also reelected Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) as whip and advanced Klobuchar to chair the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee.
Other leadership updates included Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) assuming the newly created role of chair of the Strategic Communications Committee. Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) retained their positions as vice chairs of the Senate Democratic Conference. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) will remain in outreach leadership roles, while Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) continues as conference secretary.
Despite losing four Senate seats in the 2024 election and experiencing Sen. Joe Manchin’s (I-W.Va.) departure from the party, Schumer vowed bipartisan cooperation while defending core Democratic values.
