Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, in a notable critique by a U.S. leader against the Israeli government amid its conflict with Hamas, has called for new elections in Israel to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Schumer, the most senior Jewish official in the U.S., expressed concerns on the Senate floor, stating the current Israeli government no longer meets the country’s needs following the events of Oct. 7. Highlighting the drastic changes in the global landscape, Schumer argued that Israel is being constrained by outdated governance.
Schumer criticized Netanyahu for prioritizing political survival over Israel’s welfare, aligning with far-right figures such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, which he believes is diminishing global support for Israel. He warned that Israel’s survival is at risk if it becomes internationally isolated.
Further addressing the conflict with Hamas, Schumer called for strategic adjustments and greater efforts to safeguard Palestinian civilians in Gaza, emphasizing their right to not suffer for Hamas’ actions. He supported President Biden’s push for a temporary ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian aid and the release of hostages but opposed a permanent ceasefire that could enable Hamas to rebuild and attack Israeli civilians again. Schumer firmly stated that a two-state solution is unfeasible if Hamas maintains any significant power.
