Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Monday urged President Biden to prioritize policy issues while campaigning, criticizing the media for turning politics “into a beauty contest.” In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source,” Sanders expressed confidence in Biden’s ability to serve despite concerns about his age and mental acuity.
“It’s an issue,” Sanders said regarding Biden’s age. “But you know what else people are worried about?… Are they able to afford to feed their families, to pay the rent? Are they having a living wage?”
Sanders accused the media of making politics superficial: “What media does to a large degree, is make politics into a beauty contest… You are voting for somebody on policy. Who is going to improve your life?”
Following Biden’s recent debate performance against former President Trump, Sanders recommended Biden engage directly with voters and focus on policy contrasts. “He has got to… interact with people, turn off the teleprompter, and people can make a judgment for themselves how well he’s doing,” Sanders said.
On CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Sanders also emphasized Biden should promote his economic agenda to appeal to working-class voters amid ongoing concerns about his age.
