Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) condemned President Trump’s pardons of Jan. 6 rioters, calling them a dangerous endorsement of violence against law enforcement. Speaking on CNN’s The Source, Sanders rejected comparisons to former President Biden’s controversial pardons of family members before leaving office.
Sanders argued that Biden’s pardons were a preemptive measure driven by Trump’s rhetoric about targeting his political opponents, emphasizing, “Don’t equate the two.” He added, “I don’t know anyone in Trump’s family that attempted to overthrow the U.S. government.”
Trump’s pardons, issued on his first day back in office, included over 1,500 Capitol riot participants, including leaders of extremist groups. Sanders criticized the message this sends, stating, “To tell the entire world we’re going to pardon people who attacked and hurt police officers is a horrible message.”
Both presidents’ actions have sparked debate and divided public opinion.
