Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) responded sharply to Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) comment that lawmakers boycotting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address are “siding with terrorists.” Sanders called it a “disgusting lie” on MSNBC’s Chris Hayes show.
Johnson and other congressional leaders invited Netanyahu to address Congress. Initially planned for June 13, the speech was postponed due to the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
Sanders, critical of Netanyahu’s policies and the conflict with Hamas, pledged to boycott the address. Johnson specifically criticized Sanders for this stance, saying, “This is a time to choose a side. If Bernie Sanders wants to side with the terrorists, then so be it.”
Sanders strongly condemned Hamas, stating, “What Hamas did is atrocious. Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, is a war criminal. He should be in jail. And Israel had every right in the world to defend itself against Hamas.” Sanders accused Johnson of lying, likening his tactics to historical accusations against civil rights advocates.
