Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) criticized Elon Musk for defending the H-1B visa program, accusing it of prioritizing low-cost foreign labor over American workers. Sanders stated the program enriches billionaires by replacing well-paying U.S. jobs with lower-wage foreign labor, contrary to Musk’s claim that it hires “the best and the brightest.”
The H-1B visa program, widely used by tech companies to address skill shortages, has recently faced backlash, including from Trump’s working-class supporters. Sanders cited Tesla’s layoffs of over 7,500 American workers while employing H-1B visa holders as evidence against Musk’s argument.
Sanders also called for raising the federal minimum wage, arguing that corporations should not save costs by hiring overseas labor at the expense of American jobs.
