Sen. Bernie Sanders criticized President-elect Donald Trump’s call to jail members of the House Jan. 6 Committee, calling it “an outrageous statement” and likening it to authoritarianism. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sanders urged President Joe Biden to consider preemptive pardons for the committee members, including former Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.
Trump previously stated that the committee members “should go to jail” and expressed plans to pardon Jan. 6 participants convicted for their actions, claiming they were subjected to poor prison conditions. To date, over 1,500 individuals have faced charges, with more than 1,200 convicted or pleading guilty.
Republican support for Trump’s position is not universal. Sen. Lindsey Graham rejected the idea of jailing committee members, while committee members, including Reps. Adam Schiff and Bennie Thompson, defended their work, asserting it adhered to the law. Cheney condemned Trump’s remarks as a continued attack on the rule of law.
A Trump transition team spokesperson did not comment on Sanders’ remarks.
