OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a personal donation to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund, joining Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Altman emphasized his support for Trump’s plans to advance U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence.
Altman told Fox News Digital, “President Trump will lead our country into the age of AI,” and expressed eagerness to ensure America stays competitive globally. He clarified the donation is from his personal wealth, not OpenAI.
Altman has highlighted the importance of building AI infrastructure within the U.S. to maintain dominance against global rivals like China. He expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to lead these efforts, stating, “AI requires massive infrastructure… we need to build that here.”
Altman downplayed concerns over Elon Musk’s growing influence in the tech-regulation space under Trump’s administration. Musk, now co-leading the Department of Government Efficiency, is considered a strong rival to OpenAI through his xAI company. Additionally, Trump appointed Musk ally David Sacks as “White House A.I. and Crypto Czar,” raising industry concerns about regulatory impact on competitors.
In contrast, Zuckerberg and Bezos are contributing $1 million each to Trump’s fund via their companies. Trump has met with Zuckerberg and plans to meet Bezos soon, signaling an effort to maintain relationships across the tech industry.
