London Mayor Sadiq Khan used a Tuesday opinion piece in The Guardian to warn that Donald Trump has fueled “divisive, far-right politics” with global consequences. Khan urged European and U.K. leaders to confront reactionary movements, citing exploitation of economic anxiety and mistrust in institutions.

“President Donald Trump and his coterie have perhaps done the most to fan the flames of divisive, far-right politics around the world in recent years,” Khan wrote, referencing Trump’s 2019 visit to Britain when he accused the president of weaponizing xenophobia and racism.

Trump arrived in England Tuesday evening for a state visit that includes meetings with King Charles III at Windsor Castle and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Policy discussions are expected to cover tariffs, Ukraine, and the conflict in Gaza.

Khan emphasized that the U.K.-United States partnership should involve honesty, including criticism when warranted. “Those who seek to divide us will find a city determined to defend its liberal, democratic values more fiercely than ever,” he wrote.

The president has previously criticized Khan, calling him a “stone cold loser” in 2019. Last year, Khan highlighted global attention on the U.S. presidential election, noting its impact beyond American borders.
