In the wake of a lone gunman’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally, rumors, misinformation, and conspiracies spread rapidly. Among the various claims were false flag rumors and accusations of deliberate negligence by the Secret Service. A Democratic protester suggested the incident might have been staged, while some online voices speculated that the Secret Service left Trump vulnerable on purpose.

Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi refuted these claims, asserting that they had increased protective resources and technology in response to the heightened campaign activity. Analysis by PeakMetrics revealed that while most social media posts expressed solidarity, over 3% were conspiracy theories. Cyabra, a disinformation analysis firm, found that bots were responsible for nearly half of the profiles promoting the narrative that Trump staged the shooting.

Yphtach Lelkes, co-director of the Polarization Research Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, highlighted the dangers of such conspiracies, noting their potential to embolden extreme individuals. He compared the current situation to the top-down disinformation of the 2020 election, suggesting that today’s misinformation is more bipartisan and grassroots. Lelkes emphasized the role of journalists in providing verifiable information, but acknowledged the challenges posed by the fragmented media landscape and a public increasingly skeptical of all sources.

He noted that political polarization and motivated reasoning contribute to the spread of conspiracies, with people seeking information that supports their pre-existing beliefs. Lelkes stressed the need for a shared narrative to foster unity, differentiating between mere tolerance and genuine unity. Without a common set of facts and the capacity for empathy, true unity remains elusive.
