WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump on Friday denied reports that the administration planned imminent military strikes on Venezuela.

Rubio criticized the Miami Herald on the social platform X, calling its report “a fake story” and saying unnamed sources “tricked” the outlet into publishing claims of upcoming U.S. strikes. The Herald had reported that the Trump administration was preparing to target military installations linked to Venezuela’s Soles drug cartel “at any moment.”

Trump also dismissed the report when questioned Friday, saying, “No. It’s not true.” The Wall Street Journal had separately reported that potential targets included Venezuelan facilities allegedly used for drug smuggling but emphasized that Trump had not made a final decision.

Last week, the Pentagon deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier and its air wing to the Caribbean as part of a broader counter-narcotics mission. U.S. forces have already conducted strikes against boats suspected of smuggling drugs in the region, resulting in multiple deaths.

The Trump administration’s escalating military posture in the Caribbean has fueled speculation about broader regional objectives, though officials maintain the operations are focused solely on drug interdiction.
