Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced late Monday that the U.S. will begin revoking visas of foreign nationals who publicly celebrated the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.
“America will not host foreigners who celebrate the death of our fellow citizens,” Rubio wrote on X, adding that “visa revocations are under way. If you are here on a visa and cheering on the public assassination of a political figure, prepare to be deported. You are not welcome in this country.”
Kirk was shot and killed Sept. 10 during an event at Utah Valley State University. Suspect Tyler Robinson was arrested the following day after a 33-hour manhunt.
Rubio’s post included an interview clip with Fox News’ Gillian Turner in which he defended the policy. “We are not in the business of inviting people to visit our country who are going to be involved in negative and destructive behavior,” he said. “If they’re already here, we should be revoking their visa.”
The decision marks a rare use of visa authority to target political speech. While the State Department has broad discretion in issuing visas, civil liberties groups may raise concerns over whether celebratory comments, however controversial, constitute grounds for deportation.
