Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in an interview that President Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland is a serious national security matter, not a joke. Speaking with SiriusXM’s Megyn Kelly, Rubio argued that China could establish Arctic facilities under corporate cover, potentially enabling military operations in a conflict.
Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to buy Greenland, claiming Denmark may eventually agree. However, Greenlandic Prime Minister Múte Egede rejected the idea, saying, “We don’t even want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders.” A tense Jan. 15 call between Trump and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reportedly escalated into a confrontation over the issue.
Rubio contended that Denmark would struggle to defend Greenland from China without U.S. support, reinforcing Trump’s case for greater American control. Denmark recently announced a $2 billion Arctic defense package, including long-range drones and new ships.
