Conservative operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, who launched a robocall campaign to discourage Black New Yorkers from voting by mail in the 2020 U.S. election, will pay a $1.25 million settlement. They were found liable for sending false and threatening messages.
The automated calls falsely claimed that mail-in voting would lead to tracking for outstanding warrants, credit card debt, and mandatory vaccines.
The National Coalition on Black Civic Participation had to redirect resources to address these false claims. Burkman and Wohl pleaded guilty to telecommunications fraud in Ohio and were fined $5.1 million by the FCC for making over 1,100 unlawful robocalls.
