Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has clarified his position on government abortion limits, following backlash over his earlier comments opposing such limits. In a recent post, Kennedy expressed support for an “emerging consensus” that abortion should be legal up to a certain number of weeks and restricted thereafter.
Kennedy, who initially ran as a Democrat before switching to independent, has always advocated for medical freedom and bodily autonomy. He cited cases where a woman seeks an abortion due to a fatal condition in the baby as reasons for his reluctance to involve the government in abortion decisions.
He believes that abortion should be unrestricted until the point of viability outside the womb. This principle, he stated, will guide his actions as President, whether implemented by Congress, the states, or in court.
Kennedy also argued for a deeper examination of the reasons behind abortions, noting that economic factors often play a role. In response, he developed a “More Choices, More Life” policy to support parents with affordability. This includes a plan for universally affordable child care, capping expenses at 10% for most families, and providing support for women in need.
Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s running mate, also shared her views on abortion. She expressed discomfort with the idea of her body being regulated, but also stated she would not feel right about terminating a viable life.
