Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy admitted to dumping a dead bear in New York City’s Central Park a decade ago, preempting what he claims will be a negative story from The New Yorker. In a video posted on X, Kennedy, accompanied by actress Roseanne Barr, recounted the incident.
Kennedy explained that he encountered a woman who had hit and killed a bear while driving through the Hudson Valley. He picked up the bear, intending to skin it and store the meat. However, a late dinner in New York City prevented him from returning home to Westchester with the bear.
Faced with the prospect of leaving the bear in his car while traveling to the airport, Kennedy devised a plan to leave it in Central Park. He mentioned a series of bicycle accidents in the city and thought it would be amusing to make it appear as though the bear had been hit by a bike.
The incident made national headlines in October 2014 when a woman walking her dog discovered the dead cub beside a bike in Central Park. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation determined the bear had died from blunt force injuries consistent with a vehicle collision.
Kennedy expressed concern about potential legal repercussions at the time but noted the story eventually faded. He brought it up now in response to The New Yorker’s fact-checkers contacting him about the incident.
