The Republican National Committee (RNC) has filed a lawsuit against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, aiming to compel state election officials to purge the state’s voter registration rolls. The lawsuit alleges Michigan’s failure to maintain accurate voter rolls as required by the National Voter Registration Act, pointing to discrepancies such as counties with more registered voters than eligible adults.

This legal move follows recent changes in the RNC’s leadership, closely linked with Trump allies, setting the stage for the 2024 election. The complaint highlights significant discrepancies in voter registration rates across Michigan, asserting that these anomalies exceed logical and historical registration patterns.

While the process for maintaining accurate voter rolls is mandated by federal law, there’s a balance to strike between updating records and safeguarding against unnecessary voter removals. Despite concerns raised by Republicans regarding the integrity of bloated voter rolls, there is no evidence suggesting that such discrepancies lead to voter fraud.

Benson defends the state’s efforts in updating the voter rolls, mentioning the removal of over 700,000 voters due to ineligibility and the planned removal of additional registrants pending their participation in the upcoming general election. She criticizes the lawsuit as a meritless public relations effort undermining confidence in election security.
