Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, during a closed session at the RNC’s winter meeting in Las Vegas, urged the party to unify with the aim of defeating President Joe Biden in the upcoming election. McDaniel’s call for solidarity comes as the party faces financial difficulties, with campaign finance disclosures revealing the RNC has $8 million in cash and $1 million in debt. In contrast, former President Donald Trump’s campaign boasts $42 million, while Biden’s team has $117.4 million on hand.
McDaniel’s leadership is challenged by a faction of far-right conservatives, led by Turning Point founder Charlie Kirk, who criticize the RNC for lavish spending and losing touch with the grassroots base. This criticism follows a series of electoral setbacks attributed to the party’s strategy. Turning Point recently held a counter-event in Las Vegas, signaling a concerted effort to influence the RNC’s direction.
Despite these internal disputes, McDaniel emphasized the importance of unity within the party, stating, “We Republicans will stick together, as united as the union our party long ago fought to preserve.” However, the discord within the party is evident, with Trump allies attempting to declare him the “presumptive nominee,” a move retracted after backlash due to Nikki Haley’s ongoing campaign.
