Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggested that former President Donald Trump’s recent debate performance could impact his support among independent voters. Speaking to Fox News, Kennedy said polling next week might reveal a “drop in support” from this key group, citing that Trump “got distracted” during the debate. He added that Trump had “an airtight argument for his presidency” but failed to present it effectively.
Although Trump claimed victory in the debate, a CNN flash poll indicated that 63% of viewers believed Vice President Kamala Harris outperformed him. Kennedy expressed skepticism about the reliability of such polls, mentioning potential “statistical problems.”
Despite his critique of Trump’s performance, Kennedy maintained his support for the former president, stating, “On the substance, President Trump wins.” He also praised Harris’s preparation and delivery, but emphasized that Trump “wins in terms of his governance.”
Kennedy noted that Trump missed opportunities during the debate, especially when asked if Americans were better off now than four years ago. He suggested Trump could have criticized the Biden-Harris administration by addressing issues like Middle Eastern tensions and poverty rates. Kennedy endorsed Trump after suspending his own presidential campaign and plans to appear with him at rallies in swing states.
