Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the independent presidential candidate, views the first presidential debate between President Biden and former President Trump as a potential boost for his third-party campaign, despite not qualifying to participate. Kennedy, who did not meet CNN’s debate criteria, criticized both Biden and Trump’s performances during his own counterprogramming event on Rumble and X.
Kennedy expressed hope that voters, disillusioned with the current major party candidates, might start considering him as a viable alternative. “They are tired of choosing the lesser of two evils,” Kennedy told NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas.
Although he missed the 15% threshold in four qualifying polls and sufficient state ballots to reach 270 electoral votes, Kennedy argued that his presence in the debate would have benefited voters by providing a younger and different option compared to the 81-year-old Biden and 78-year-old Trump.
The debate highlighted concerns about Biden’s age, stamina, and mental acuity, as well as Trump’s propensity to share false information. Kennedy believes these issues create an opening for his campaign.
Despite speculation about potentially replacing Biden, Kennedy, who switched his registration to independent in October, dismissed the idea of re-joining the Democratic Party. He humorously questioned who within the party he would even approach about such a move.
